We will be Rock Climbing at Torrent Falls on April 9 and 10.
Torrent Falls is in the Red River Gorge area of Kentucky near Natural Bridge State Park. It’s about 3 1/2 hours south of West Chester; not too far away from Camp Mckee, one of our favorite summer camps. Total cost of the trip will be between $50 and $75 per scout depending on the activities they choose. The base cost is $35 for a day-pass on the Via Ferrata. In addition, there will be a $5 fuel charge and a $10 charge for food. We will probably drive down early Saturday morning, set up camp and climb Saturday afternoon until dusk. We have the option to extend our day-pass into Sunday for an additional $10 per person.
The Torrent Falls Climbing Adventure offers a day pass on the Via Ferrata. This includes training and all the gear necessary for the day. The adventure is open to all scouts and does not require previous climbing experience. The Via Ferrata is a cable system that allows climbers to experience new heights by attaching to the cable with specialized gear. A climber can also use the iron hand and foot rungs that are drilled into the rock face and held in place with an industrial epoxy to aid their climb. It’s similar to the C.O.P.E. course at camp Friedlander but much larger and set on an actual cliff face.
The Via Ferrata is broken up into six different sections with a total of four levels of difficulty. The difficulty ranges from easy to expert. There are two easy sections, an intermediate section, two advanced sections, and an expert section. At each section there is an exit point in which a climber can make their way back to the main facility.
Torrent Falls also offers an all day Climbing Merit Badge class for an additional fee. After completion of the Climbing Merit Badge, scouts are free to climb the Via Ferrata for the rest of the day. You must be 14 to take this class.
